Mornings with Meg of Root for Food

We recently got the chance to connect with the lovely Meg of Root for Food. Meg is a holistic dietician and shares her passion for food, herbalism, intentional living, and sustainability on her site and Instagram.

Meg recently featured our bedding on her blog, and we are so excited to have her on our blog today!

Tell us a bit about yourself!

Hi everyone! My name is Meg Dixon! I’m a Texas girl living in St Petersburg Florida with my Husband, and 4 fur children- two rabbits, an adorable dog, and a mean cat.

I am an integrative dietitian by trade, and I have a passion for sustainable and conscious living and encouraging others in their own journey. That’s ultimately what brought me to SOL and why I am such a huge believer in their products and the mission behind what they do.

If you follow me on IG, you’ll know I love DIY projects, herbalism, travel, and eco conscious living. I have more hobbies than I can list, but my current obsession is throwing pottery! Honestly, between my husband and I, there is never a dull moment in our home!

How do you start your day? Any morning routines?

Something that I’ve learned the hard way- morning routines are incredibly important for me. For my mental wellbeing and in determining how my day goes. I’ve heard the quote, “how the day starts is how the day will go”, and I’ve certainly found this to be true.

I feel like there is something sacred and special about the morning moments after waking. Whether you have 3 minutes of alone time, or 3 hours, redeeming that time is so important.

For me, that means aligning my intentions for the day. Before I’m exposed to anyone else’s energy, I ensure that I am in a good headspace. This has led me to be less reactive to situations, less anxious or stressed, and more joyful.

This means I keep my phone on airplane mode during this time- I do not look at email, Instagram, texts, etc. until I am done with my morning routine.

My typical morning routine looks something like this:

Upon waking, I go downstairs, and I put water on the stove to make my french pressed coffee. I adore my morning brew. With heavy cream. ALWAYS with heavy cream. Every morning when I take that first sip I think, DANG THAT’S GOOD.

While my water is heating, I grind my coffee beans, and pick up around the house. (I like to start my day with a clean slate).

I do some light stretching and at this point, my water is ready! I make my brew, pour it into my favorite mug and head to my screened in porch where I spend the next 5- 30 minutes meditating, journaling, reading, and listening to the birds sing.

What would your perfect morning look like?

The perfect morning is Saturday morning. A slow Saturday morning where Blake and I wake up early and spend the morning hours sipping on coffee, talking and crafting.

At around 10, we walk down our street to the bay, and bask in the warm, salty air. We work our way to the farmers market downtown and get our food for the week.

If this could be every morning, I’d be living the life.

Can you share any tips for starting your day off right?

The biggest thing I believe someone can do is to turn their phone on airplane mode at night and keep it on airplane mode until they are done with their morning routine- even if it is just 3 minutes of sitting in silence!

Also, don’t underestimate the power of writing things down. I believe everyone should have a journal, and even if you write down nothing else- write down 3 things you are grateful for every morning. They can be silly, or serious. For example, mine for today were:

  1. The cat hasn’t bitten me today
  2. Less anxious thoughts/ slow Monday mornings
  3. Good conversations with old friends

Remember, even if you only have 3 minutes to sit alone with yourself, redeem that time. It can make all the difference.

What does a typical breakfast look like for you?

To be honest, there is not a “typical” for me. It always changes throughout the month because my cravings are constantly changing. But recently, I’ve been eating a lot of muesli with whole milk from a local farm, cashews, and raw honey. It’s to die for.

Coffee drinker of a tea drinker?

I think I’ve made it pretty clear that I love my morning coffee… but if it’s not the morning, I LOVE tea. Ice tea, hot tea, chai tea, matcha tea.. ALL TEA.

What sparked your passion for a sustainable lifestyle?

Since I’m a dietitian, it started with becoming more aware of the corruption in the food system. This gradually and inevitably trickled into other areas of my life such as clothing, cleaning, makeup etc. I have always felt an inseparable bond with the earth and nature, so I feel compelled to do whatever I can to protect and preserve it and encourage others to do the same.

I think the sustainability message often feels unattainable for people to achieve. It should not be this way. I want pursuing a more earth conscious lifestyle to be fun, easy and empowering.

What’s behind the name, “Root for Food?”

Like I said, my journey with sustainability started with food. I became incredibly passionate about connecting people back with real food- to our food culture and to the makers and growers of our food. To the farmers. To seasonal eating. Our modern culture centered on convenience has become so disconnected with our food culture. This is a shame. I am passionate about educating about our food system so that people can develop their own beliefs and convictions and make informed decisions.

In that regard, I “root for food”.

A good morning starts with a good night’s sleep! How do you wind down at night?

This is so true! Well, my night time routines are not very elaborate. They generally consist of an evening stroll on the bay with my dog, dinner, time with my husband & fur children, dessert, and turning my phone on airplane mode. We are both night owls to be honest, so as much as I love sleep, getting in bed before 10 is not common for us. My favorite way to fall asleep though, is a good book.

What are you reading right now?

I am typically reading a handful of books at a time, but two books I am currently reading are Project Drawdown and the Hobbit.
