Our mission is to make the softest, most durable and highest quality 100% organic cotton bedding at a price that’s fair for everyone. How do we accomplish that?
We worked tirelessly to find the right partners to fulfill our vision of “Fair Trade at a Fair Price.” Not only do our farming and factory partners produce the highest quality products, they strictly adhere to the highest social, economic and environmental standards. Which means our customers benefit completely from our cotton.
Conventional cotton contains hazardous chemicals that strip the land of its growing power, which also increases costs & labor for the farmer & often leaves unsafe residue on the end product.
Conventional cotton also consumers 25% of the world’s insecticide market and 10% of the sale of global pesticides—making it the planet’s most pesticide-intensive crop.
To protect the planet, the farmers and you—our customers—we use only the finest Fair Trade Certified™ 100% organic long-staple cotton, grown from non-GMO cottonseeds. That means the farmers and cooperatives we work with are certified organic, Fair Trade and also carbon-neutral. They invest in women farmers; practice sustained resource management of soil and water; and only use non-genetically modified cottonseeds. It also means you will not find a trace of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers at all. We practice water conservation by using rain-fed irrigation systems and eco-friendly, low-impact water-based dyes. Everything about our bedding is ethical, sustainable and eco-friendly.
Child labor is an epidemic in the textile industry. We believe children should be in school getting and education, and living a happy, care-free life.
Our factory partners only employ adults that make a living wage. There is no child or forced labor. There is no discrimination of race, age, sex, religion or political affiliation. The working environment is clean, safe and free of harmful chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers.
And our partners have second-party certification by FLO, GOTS, Oeko Tex & Fair Trade. From farm to factory to fabric—and lastly, to the comfort of your bed—you can rest peacefully knowing that every step of the process was taken thoughtfully, respectfully and above all, organically.
How do we get our sheets to be so soft and strong? It's all in the details.
Sheets get their strength and durability from their fibers. Shorter fiber strands tend to stray out of the weave, leading to coarser fabric. SOL uses only long staple fibers in the production of our organic cotton sheets. Longer cotton fibers mean stronger, finer & smoother yarn.
Each long staple cotton fiber is made into single ply yarn. Why? Because it produces light, long-lasting sheets. Fabrics that use 2 or 3 ply yarn result in heavy, coarse fabrics. Who wants that?
We spin our single ply yarn into a fine thread. Why does thread size matter? Compare a bulky jute rug with a silk scarf. The silk scarf is lighter and smoother, right? The finer the thread, the lighter and softer the fabric.
Higher thread count doesn’t always mean higher quality. Unlike other companies that use 2 or 3 ply threads to increase their thread count (which produces a coarse fabric), all of our organic cotton sheets have a 300 thread count and are all made of single ply yarn. What is thread count, you ask? Thread count is the number of threads woven together in a square inch of fabric.
A sheet’s weave is directly tied to how it looks and feels. We employ a sateen weave, which produces a breathable, silky smooth finish, perfect for year round comfort. What does a sateen weave mean? It means one-yarn-under and three-yarn-over to produce the signature sateen sheen of our fabric.
